All about Mountain Biking in Ladakh

This ultimate mountain biking journey from Leh-Manali is one of the ultimate challenges for mountain bikers. The truly classic ride across the chain of the Himalayas by way of four famous passes, The Tanglang La (5280 mtrs.), Lachalung La (5065 mtrs.), The Baralacha La (4995 mtrs.) and The Rohtang La (3990 mtrs.). The route traverse four high passes with an accumulated altitude gain exceeding 29 000 feet-the equivalent of cycling to the summit of Mt. Everest from sea level. The road is two-lane tarmac with optional shortcuts and dirt routes and is ideal for biking. Traffic is moderate; except for long army convey fuel supply vehicles to be encountered. Summer months are relatively dry. This route is open from the end of May till the first week of October... From Delhi, we travel by air to Leh. We keep a couple of days for acclimatization with a downhill ride from the highest motorable pass Khardungla. From Leh, the tour starts with a gradual and flat ride to Rumtse at 4000m, halfway towards the Baralacha La. The landscape changes after crossing Baralacha La (5300 mtrs.) with the views Himalayan Mountains and barren flat plains of Changthang. We pass through Nakila, Lachung La and Gatta Loops to Sarchu which are long green pastures. Baralacha la is the hardest climb we encounter on a flowing day with many snowy mountains at the back drop. We will also spend a night stay in Jispa; which is a green oasis after the barren land of Ladakh. There are several opportunities to explore the Buddhist culture as well as allow time for an excursion to Keylong, the district headquarters of Lahaul- Spiti with its Monasteries and Royal castles. We bike onwards to Tandi and Koksar, from where a steep climb begins to Rohtang La and lush green Kullu Valley. Spend 1-2of days in Manali and enjoy its nearby tourist attractions.

Kim Burgess & Ann Cowling, Australian National University, Australia (2006) We sincerely recommend Adventure Trips India to women alone, families as well as mixed groups. Children are not only welcomed but appreciated. Safe adventurous travel is their passion. Risks are not taken. The food was fantastic and more than we would eat. However, we look forward to the future and bringing friends and spouses to India to enjoy trekking with Adventure Trips India.

Having done treks with Adventure Trips India & Kundan, to Tapovan, Kuari Pass and Tungnath we would strongly recommend him to anyone wanting to organize a trek in the Himalayas. He has a great team and is a very good organizer. His knowledge of the areas trekked, his quiet confidence that keeps you reassured and his ability to adjust to the capacity of the group are qualities that make him the person we keep coming back to all our treks...
